Linda de Cossart is a Consultant General & Vascular Surgeon in the City of Chester. For the past year she has also served as Vice President of the Royal College of Surgeons (England) and at the end of October 2009, retires after a 37yr career in the Medical Profession aged 61.
Linda talks to us about her experiences during her career from her office in the hospital during her last working week, whilst packing and preparing to vacate her position. Footage of Linda’s last ever operating session shows us an emotional journey as she takes this momentous step towards retirement.
We also see footage of Linda’s last teaching session, something she intends to continue after her retirement as a surgeon, having recently been appointed Director of Medical Education for the hospital. She explains that she is proud and excited to have the opportunity to take up this new role.
Audio, photographs & video footage appear of Linda’s 2 leaving parties, where colleagues & friends talk fondly of her and admire her career acheivements as an eminent pioneering surgeon in her field.
Linda talks of her future plans, whilst footage of her relaxing at her new home in the Costwolds appears, a sharp contrast to her career in a busy city hospital and weekly commutes to London.
This film will try to summarise a 37yr career of a doctor / surgeon / pioneer / writer / educator & Vice President of the Royal College of Surgeons as she prepares to retire and adjust to her new life in the Cotswolds as Director of Medical Education.
Some of the questions it will raise are: Whether retirement is an ending or a beginning? Whether someones career defines them as a person? Does everyone have equal opportunities open to them to pursue new careers after 60?
